Album Cover Textual Analysis

Take Care

This is Canadian recording artist drake's second studio album Take Care. The image of the cover is of the artist looking down with his left arm crossed. His right arm is not fully crossed with shows that he is open. As he is looking down it also shows that he is reflecting back on his past. The photo used for this cover makes drake look like a king. He wanted to emphasis the fact that before he became famous and had fans he was once just a kid from his mum's basement with nothing. He likes to show of what he's got now from working hard as he is doing in this image.

Album Cover Textual Analysis

good kid, m.A.A.d city

This is the second studio album by recording artist Kendrick Lamar. The text style on this album cover has been written on by hand. This makes the album seem very real as it looks like the artist has just written on it with fresh ink, this allows the artist to connect with the audience. It is on a grey background so it stands out and can easily be read.

The image on the cover shows a street on Compton, Kendrick's hometown. The special effect that has been put over the album image makes the cover seem like it's a piece of paper that has been put away in someones pocket. The white creases show where the paper has been folded. The effect can also show that the cover is old.

Male orientated magazine

The masthead on this magazine 'maxim' is partly covered by Lacey Chabert. This shows that is is well known magazine. The single image is off American actress Lacey Chabert, we see her flaunting her figure in the shot as well as looking directly at the camera. This image is likely to attract a male audience. The colour used for the masthead is black, this is more of a masculine colour.

The main cover line '17 best cars of the year' shows that this is a male orientated magazine as men are more likely to be attracted to this. The colour of it is red being another masculine colour. The cover lines are in black and red which are keeping to the theme of the magazine. The cover line 'Lacey Chabert sexier than ever!' is divided into red and black with the name in black and the rest in red. This could be because red is a more feminine colour and the cover line makes the audience believe that all females should be sexier than ever. The socio-economic modal that this magazine is aimed at would be D.

Female orientated magazine

Vogue magazine

The masthead is in the magazines style in gold across the top. Gold resembles power, strength and perfection which is what woman may desire the most. The masthead is party covered by the image but this isn't a problem as the vogue magazines are already well known so does not have to be fully shown.

The cover lines are aimed at woman as they are relating to woman's fashion and the image. There are a lot of cover lines on different topics. Parts of the cover lines are in bold to stand out to the audience with most being in white which stands out from the blue background. Black is used for one of the cover lines to show importance and make it stand out the most.

The main image is of the recording artist, actress, and fashion designer Rihanna. The image covers half of the cover and show her looking at the camera. It looks as though she's looking at the audience so this is more likely to grab their attention. Her hair is red which also draws attention to the cover.

Holby City

Visual codes - The visual codes included in holby city are the clothes worn, the place where it's set and the different lighting. The characters in holby city wear suits and gowns according to their job role. This creates a more realistic setting as they are accurately dressed in accordance with their role in the hospital. High key lighting is mostly used as this is most appropriate for a hospital environment as the patients may require close attention and also it allows the audience to see whats going on.

The technical codes used including camera are median (mid) shots, panned cameras, zooming, close ups and hand held cameras. The mid shots are used on the characters to show their body language as the audience get to understand the characters emotions. When the camera pans around the characters this gives the effect that you the audience are there with them in the scene and also gives a 360 degree view of the characters. The hand held camera that is used makes the audience feel more involved in the situation as it gives the feeling of you being there.

The technical codes that are used are mostly non diegetic sound and diegetic sound. The non diegetic sound is used to make the scenes and the surrounding seem more realistic and add a level of realism. The diegetic sound is played in the opening sequence which makes it seem more dramatic.

How races/religions are represented within the media.

In this example of how different races or religions are represented in the media, Ray Dixon, a character from EastEnders was stopped by the police. Ray then has reason to believe the police officer is being racist. The audience are lead to believe the police officer suspects him of mugging because of his race. This may imply that he is more likely to be guilty of a mugging because of his race from what is being shown. However this is not an accurate reflection of race and religion and has only been stereotyped. Ray later then becomes a mentor for children facing similar circumstances.

The last film I watched at the cinema

The conjuring was the latest film I went to see at the cinema, a horror based on the true story of the Warrens. Not only do I like horrors but the film being based on a true story and from the director of Saw and Insidious made me want to watch it more. Would recommend this film.
